Klippers San Marzano tomatoes are fab

Sorry about our two month summer pause! We highly recommend San Marzano tomatoes from Klippers Organic Acres (250-499-2050) which you can get at Vancouver farmers markets like the West End one where we picked up ours. It is that time of the year when you can with a minimum of fuss combine their fab tomatoes with fresh home made pasta with mint from your garden and yummy pecorino from Les Amis du Fromage or elsewhere and you have a fantastic seasonal treat.

Winter Farmers Market November 4, 2006

Today's Winter Farmers Market at the Wise Hall was a big success. Obviously there is a huge pent up demand for local food and food products that hitherto hasn't been met. When we arrived at 10:30a.m. it was full. Chaos but good chaos! Lots of great stuff to be bought like apples, and lots of other local produce and great treats like the wonderful potato onion tart ($3, no photo, I ate it so quickly there was no time for a photo!) from Something Sweet. See you on December 2 at the Wise Hall!

Dundarave Olives at East Van Farmers Market tomorrow

The right combo of spice, black olive goodness and texture. And totally lacking that bitter back bite that a lot of black olives have. A bargain at $7 (also love their other stuffed olives, like their olives stuffed with feta). Check them out tomorrow at the East Van aka Trout Lake Farmers Market and (gratuitous plug), Midnight Kitchen will be there too.
He is quite a character. Passionate about his business and a comedian to boot! We caught him at the East Van Farmer's Market on September 2, 2006.

This video was originally shared on blip.tv by roland with a Creative Commons Attribution license.

Tomato Tart from Tami Moritz's Something Sweet

Tomato Tart from Something Sweet:

Blueberry Tart from Something Sweet

At last Wednesday's Riley Park Farmers Market, Barb and I tried Tami Moritz's Something Sweet's Tomato Tart. Delicious! Light, tomato and cheese. Yum. For less than $5 (actually I think it was closer to three bucks but I didn't take notes).

We also enjoyed her Blueberry Tart pictured above. Not too sweet with a real blueberry flavour.

Check out Tami's stuff at the Farmers Market before summer is over! You won't regret it. Her official Farmer's Market schedule is here on the Something Sweet's Farmers Market page but to be sure (her August 9th Riley's Park date is not on that site for example!) To avoid disappointment, I'd email her (vegheads AT shaw.ca) or call her at 604 327 8507.

Support Your Local Farmers Markets Society

Hurray! The East Van Farmers Market is open again! It's
hard to believe that when the market first opened 10 years ago, there
were only 7 farmers and they sold out in 2 hours. How the market
has grown...3 weekly markets and dozens of farmers, food artisans and
crafts people. Not to mention the growth and sustainability of a
community. Congratulations and may the markets continue to grow
and flourish!

Besides shopping at the Farmers Markets, the public can further support
the YLFMS by becoming members of the society. Membership supports
the principles of the market, helps raise funds to build awareness and
expand markets. And as a member, you get a newsletter and
discounts at some vendors and events.
Wood Elements

I love items that are both functional and beautiful. At the Nat Bailey Farmer's Market
today I came across the gorgeous craftsmanship of Alex
Zapotichny. Alex, who is a retired highschool woodworking
teacher, designs and makes hardwood cutting boards. He uses
native hardwoods and accents the boards with exotic hardwoods.

Of course I couldn't resist and bought 2 boards: one 12" round
maple and a 7" square, both very reasonably priced at $25 and
$8.50. And there were several others that I liked and would look
great in our new place!

The next time Alex will be selling his boards again will be at the
Winter Market on Sunday, December 12 at the Heritage Hall on Main and
15th.

Tomato Festival at Farmers Market starts September 8 at Nat Bailey

Speaking of real tomatoes, such as the heirloom tomatoes from yesterday's post, the Tomato Festival starts next Wednesday September 8th at the Nat Bailey Farmers' Market and continues Saturday September 11th (8 days from now) at the East Van and West End Farmers' Markets. Check it out. Lots of delicious tomatoes and information and a great opportunity to chat with real farmers about food that tastes real such as locally grown heirloom tomatoes!

Heirloom tomatoes with olive oil from the Nat Bailey Farmers' Market

It's prime heirloom tomato season. Get the real tomato flavour experience now! The flavour is so good that you won't want to eat those plastic tomatoes that we get the rest of the year. The above tomatoes came from the wonderful Nat Bailey Farmers' Market.

Jays Spring Lamb is superb

At $6 a pound, Jay Springs Lambs ground lamb is not cheap but boy is it worth it. Juicy, flavourful and not gamey. Mmm, they make beautiful burgers. Worth checking them out the next time they are at the market which is scheduled for June 5 at the East Van Farmers market.

Opening day at the East Van Farmer's Market

It's officially summer for me now that the East Van Farmers' Market has started.

Saturday's inaugural market took place in our unusually warm and sunny May weather.

The vendors change every year and every week (here's the official vendor list)
and there's always something new but the vibe remains the same. People
getting out of the house to get real food that hasn't been overly
processed or shipped thousands of miles.

Here are some of East Van Farmers Market opening day photos:

The cool sign:

Jay Springs Lamb (free range and grass fed) - new to us but probably not new to the market!

Langley Organic Growers

Rise Artisan breads & Fantasies by Christopher Brown (please bring back the cherry chocolate bread!)

The East Vancouver Farmers Market at
East 15th and Victoria Dr. starts this Saturday May 15. It runs
Saturdays 9a.m.-2p.m. until October 9, 2004. It's our favourite market.
Looking forward to seeing what's new, snacking on our favourite goodies
and buying locally grown seasonal produce. See you there!

Nat Bailey Stadium Farmers Market - Only 2 Wednesdays left

Yesterday, Barb forgot to mention the Nat Bailey Stadium Farmers Market
on Wednesdays. Only two Wednesdays left for this market!
Remember that this is the best time of the year for fresh food direct
from farmers. Peak time for squash, apples, tomatoes, zucchini,
etc.

Unlike the East Van Farmers Market
(which we love as well and runs until October 11th!), the Nat Bailey
market is uncrowded and has lots of parking and the food is just as
good. Both are ably run by EatLocal.org aka Your Local Farmers Market Society. Check them out!
Autumn Bounty

The East Van Farmers Market was
hopping today! In the peak of harvest, the market stalls were full of
gorgeous things ranging from beautiful flowers to picture perfect
squash to rosy apples. Unfortunately we forgot our camera as we rushed
out the door in the morning!

This is what we brought home
(clockwise from left): organic arugula, organic cavolo nero, monster
zucchini, organic basil, 4 varieties of organic heirloom tomatoes,
green beans, blueberries (centre).

I'll be using the zucchini (2 for $1!) in chocolate zucchini cake and zucchini cheese bread. Most of the basil and the beans will be used in trenette with pesto . I'll probably use the cavolo nero in a soothing vegetable soup. And we'll just savour the fragrant tomatoes as they are!

Yesterday I was starting to wonder if I could handle rationing the rest of our strawberries until we had a chance to visit a farmers market on the weekend. Luckily I remembered the Nat Bailey Farmers Market and I was able to leave work at a decent time.

Not only did I get my strawberry fix, but I also got my farmers market fix of wonderful things I usually have to wait until the weekend for. The Nat Bailey Farmers Market is a smaller version of the more established East Van market, but they feature similar high quality produce, plants, prepared foods and art.

Yesterday I picked up strawberries (of course), portabellini mushrooms, and organic icicle radishes and garlic scapes. For a treat, I picked up a bag of decadent caramel chocolate almonds from Bad Girl Chocolates (Kelly Boyd 694 291-9698, ksboyd@alumini.sfu.ca)--not only are the almonds divine, the packages sport pictures of 50's pulp fiction gals (fun!)

So if you're in need of a mid-week farmers market fix, check out this venue! I'm sure I'll be back.

Nat Bailey Stadium Farmers Market, 30th Ave. and Ontario St., Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. until October 1

One of our favourite markets, the East Van Farmers' Market will open on May 17, 2003. A definite sign of spring!

This year we will also check out the other great Farmers' Markets at Nat Bailey Stadium and in the West End. And we will carry our fruit and vegetables and other goodies in our new Ghanaian basket.

Tomorrow is Vancouver's 8th annual Feast of Fields, a grand harvest festival and fundraiser for Farm Folk/City Folk. The event, held at the UBC Farm, will feature an extravaganza of locally grown, prepared and brewed food.

We went down to the East Van Farmer's Market yesterday with the mission of buying some heirloom tomatoes. We found some beautiful tomatoes (I can't remember what varieties they are!) as well as some purple carrots, cavolo nero, salad turnips, gala apples and coronation grapes.

Cavolo Nero

Last weekend, we visited the East Van Farmer's Market and I was thrilled to find cavolo nero, a dark green, almost black kale. When we were in Tuscany for our honeymoon, we ate it in ribollita and I've been hoping to grow it and/or buy it here. Westcoast Seeds carries cavolo nero seeds, but I didn't get my act together this spring to grow any!

I made a hearty Tuscan minestrone with the cavolo nero. I included slow simmered cannellini beans, lots of veggies and shredded cavolo nero. With simmering, the cavolo nero turned sweet and tender.

To make ribollita, layer leftover minestrone with day old bread in an ovenproof casserole. Slowly bake until piping hot and serve drizzled with good olive oil.
Farm Fresh Guide

In Vancouver we're blessed with an abundance of locally based farms and food producers. There's no better time than summer to check out some of the great farms that are literally in our back yards!

To find out what local farms are producing and where farms are located, check out the Fraser Valley Farm Direct Marketing Association's Farm Fresh Guide. The Guide is full of interesting information about the importance of buying local, locations of farms, availability of various produce. You can also search out farms according to the produce or other agricultural products (like honey or even horses!)you're looking for.

Buying local benefits everyone. Consumers purchase fresh, nutritious produce and they learn more about where their food comes from. Farmers benefit from direct sales and support. The economy benefits from keeping dollars spent within our own community. And with the provinicial government's recent cut to the "BuyBC" program, it's even more important for consumers to directly support local food producers!
Don Shultz and Don Genova Schedule Update

To follow up from yesterday, it turns out we gave the wrong information about Don Shultz (of Big Don's Pickles fame) and Don Genova (of Pacific Palate fame).

Here's the real skinny (from Devorah, thanks again!) on Don Schultz's and Don Genova's current schedules at the East Van Farmers Market (EVFM) and West End Farmers Market (WEFM):

Don Schultz:
July 14 & 21 - EVFM
July 28 - WEFM
Sept. 8 - WEFM
Sept. 22,29 & Oct. 6 - EVFM

Don Genova & Dana Zaruba:
WEFM: July 14, 21, 28
EVFM: July 14

The two Dons may have more WEFM dates and we will post them as soon as we know!

West End Farmers Market

Devorah Kahn, one of the organizers of the East Van Farmers Market and also the West End Farmers Market, emailed us with some feedback about our stories on the East Van Farmers Market. Thanks, Devorah!

She gave us some corrections which we will be posting shortly but also reminded us about the West End Farmers Market which is held every Saturday from June 30 to October 6 at the Lord Roberts Elementary parking lot at Bidwell and Pendrell Streets from 10:000am to 2:00pm.

She writes that "there are amazing vendors there who cannot get into East Van because of the limited space."

Although we haven't been to the West End Farmers Market recently, I am sure that it is worthwhile checking out since it's organized by the same people who organize the East Van Farmers Market. Please check it out and let us know what you think!

Radishes with Butter

Last Saturday when we were at the East Van Farmers' Market, we bought some beautiful radishes which are now in season. They reminded me of a trip to San Francisco and my stay at a great bed and breakfast. For breakfast one morning, my hostess cut a deep slash into a fresh, glistening radish, filled it with a thick slice of butter and dipped it in coarse salt. She plonked it on my sideplate and proclaimed, "Now that's how to eat a radish!!" And it is! Try this for an unusual part of your French provencal breakfast or lunch. And don't throw away those lovely, fresh radish tops...they make a delicious salad.

A-maze-ing Maize

We went to the Cloverdale Produce Farm today in Surrey.

They have a maze built out of corn!

For $7 for adults (and less for kids) you get to wander around their maze. A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Barb and I wandered for an 1 hour and a half and did not reach the goal. The record time is approximately 8.5 minutes which shows you how directionally oriented we are :-) !

Here is a map of the maze:

Luckily they also have a farm market where they sell produce from their farm. We bought some delicious corn, blackberries and peaches.

Check it out! Highly recommended!

FarmFolk/CityFolk are the people behind the Vancouver Farmers' Markets and other cool local food projects. This is a non-profit that ties together consumers and producers, thus lessening the distance between consumers and farmers. I particularly appreciate FFCF's efforts to promote local and sustainable agriculture. The policy making end of this organization also ensures that we in B.C. have access to healthy food and a healthy economic agricultural base.

One of FFCF's upcoming events is the annual Feast of Fields(which this year is on Sunday September 10) a fundraiser that highlights late summer harvest of local produce, local restaurants and B.C. spirits. Sounds like an event not to be missed!
