Sorry about our two month summer pause! We highly recommend San Marzano tomatoes from Klippers Organic Acres (250-499-2050) which you can get at Vancouver farmers markets like the West End one where we picked up ours. It is that time of the year when you can with a minimum of fuss combine their fab tomatoes with fresh home made pasta with mint from your garden and yummy pecorino from Les Amis du Fromage or elsewhere and you have a fantastic seasonal treat.
Today's Winter Farmers Market at the Wise Hall was a big success. Obviously there is a huge pent up demand for local food and food products that hitherto hasn't been met. When we arrived at 10:30a.m. it was full. Chaos but good chaos! Lots of great stuff to be bought like apples, and lots of other local produce and great treats like the wonderful potato onion tart ($3, no photo, I ate it so quickly there was no time for a photo!) from Something Sweet. See you on December 2 at the Wise Hall!
Posted by Roland Tanglao on 9/22/06; 8:40:23 PM From the Farmers' Markets dept. We love the Hot Tunisian Olives from the Dundarave Olive Company. The right combo of spice, black olive goodness and texture. And totally lacking that bitter back bite that a lot of black olives have. A bargain at $7 (also love their other stuffed olives, like their olives stuffed with feta). Check them out tomorrow at the East Van aka Trout Lake Farmers Market and (gratuitous plug), Midnight Kitchen will be there too.
