UPDATE March 2003: We also love Lombardo's (#120, Il Mercato Mall, 1641 Commercial Drive, 604 251-2240). Same great food (since Lombardo's is the father of Marcello)! Just a slightly different atmosphere. Lombardo's is more cozy and trad, Marcello's is more trendy and happening. Both are great and we recommend you go to both depending on your mood and preference as we do!

If you want a thick crust pizza piled high with toppings and oozing with cheese, this IS NOT the place to go. If you're yearning for delicate, thin crust pizza with authentic toppings, then Marcello is a slice of heaven!

Marcello Pizzaria offers over 20 different pizzas fired in a woodburning oven. The pizzas are thin, crisp and delicious. The toppings also reflect a more simple approach to highlighting the flavours of the ingredients used. My favourite pizza is the Margherita: tomatoes, anchovies and capers. No cheese!

Marcello also has a great selection of antipasto, salads and pasta dishes.

Today, four of us went for lunch and ordered a salad, two bowls of gentle minestrone, a large pizza, 2 medium pizzas and a large bottle of San Pellegrino. We ate amply and had enough leftovers for 2 people. Our bill came to $57 before tip (we took advantage of a current 15% off lunch promotion).

Roland and I have been going to Marcello for months now. Valentino, our Italian teacher from Rome, touts Marcello as being the best pizzaria in Vancouver. Coming from a real Italian, you know this place must be good!
