First Visit: Au Petit Cafe - Best Vietnamese sandwiches in the city for only $4!

    From the Restaurants dept.

Our latest stop in the "go out as much as possible before the baby is born" tour was the Au Petit Cafe (4851 Main St., 604 873-3328).

They have the best Vietnamese sandwiches in Vancouver! Imagine a tasty, perfectly chewey and crunchy baguette filled with hot peppers (optional!), warm juicy meatballs, cold cuts, basil and the usual accoutrements of Vietnamese sandwiches. Pure heaven for four bucks! A much better deal than Subway or Quizno's. And much healthier!

Of course they also serve other Vietnamese food. Such as the supremely addictive Vietnamese style ice coffee (sweetened condensed milk combined with Vietnamese drip coffee and ice) and wide rice noodles with Vietnamese ham (more like meatloaf or a French quenelle) garnished with basil, cucumber and fried shallots for about 6 bucks as well as the ubiquitous pho!

The room is small and packed with people and they run out of sandwiches on busy days so do get there early. We arrived just before 2 p.m. today and we snagged one of the last sandwiches. We will be back for a mini-review shortly (hopefully before baby arrives!).
