    DanDaragan Olive Oil
Posted by Barb Wong on 7/30/04; 8:43:54 PM
    From the Features dept.

After meeting with some of the moms and babies that I met through the Kits Community Centre, I popped into Saffron (2836 West 4th Ave., 604.731.2233) to check out their "on tap" olive oils. Usually shopping for olive oils is a challenge when you can't taste them first. At Saffron, they sell oils in bulk and tasting each of them is part of the buying process.

Roland and I love fruity olive oils--the fruitier and "greener" the flavour the better. After tasting a few oils, I settled for DanDaragan extra virgin olive oil. Surprisingly, it's from Australia and is a blend of a few varieties of olives.

Tonight we put the oil to the test: we lightly toasted some Italian bread, rubbed the slices with a clove of garlic and drizzled liberally with the oil. The fruitiness of the oil shone through the pungent garlic. It reminded us of some of our favourite oils we had in Italy.

Two hundred millilitres of the DanDaragan olive oil costs $11.95. Not cheap, but it's an affordable taste luxury. The oil is well worth the cost, as you know exactly how the oil tastes and you won't be disappointed.
