First Visit: Kitanoya Guu with Otokomae
Posted by Barb Wong on 9/28/03; 8:35:33 PM
    From the Restaurants dept.

We were downtown to catch Los Zafiros at the VIFF on Friday and had to try out Kitanoya Guu with Otokomae. Like the other Guu's, the homestyle Japanese "tapas" were hearty, tasty and interesting.

The new Guu is located in what looks like a space that was occupied by a bar. The decor is dark wood and brick, somewhat unusual for casual Japanese dining. The service is also a bit more formal and upscale than the other Guu's. The food, however, is similar: inexpensive, uncomplicated and flavourful small dishes.

On Friday night our favourites were a hot and sour clam stew with rice, a spinach salad with tuna and bacon, and a miso and pepper glazed grilled sable fish. None of the dishes we ordered costed more that $7.20. Our total for the feast (enough for 3 people!) was $36.99 and included 5 dishes, a pineapple vodka cocktail and juice.
