First Visit: Del-Hi Darbar on Main
Posted by Roland Tanglao on 6/5/03; 9:45:25 PM
    From the Restaurants dept.

How and why I first tried Masala Dosas back in the late 80s at the Madras Cafe in Ottawa across from the Britannia cinemas is a mystery that has been fogged by the mists of time. Did Coleman or did Doug recommend it?

Whatever it was, ever since my first Masala Dosa at the Madras Cafe (which seems to still be there at 66 Wylie Avenue, Ottawa) back in the late 80s, I have been hooked by this combination of paper-thin crepe and spicy but not too spicy potato and onion filling served with coconut chutney and sambar.

So much so that I seek it out at every opportunity! And when I found out that Del-Hi Darbar ( 2120 Main St. at 5th, 604 877-7733) had it on their menu, we had to try it out!

I am happy to report that it was excellent. Thin, crispy and large with an tasty filling that wasn't too hot nor too bland. A bargain at $5.95!

We also had a bhhel poori for about $6 that was great too! One of my favourites (thanks to Vijay for introducing this to me at that wonderful restaurant in North London all those years ago!) Fried noodles, puffed rice, potatoes, and tamarind. Bitter sweet, subtly spicy goodness!

Needless to say we will be back for a full mini-review
